I was listening to the main loop of the STS-117 mission on Nasa TV
today, and from the ground they were monitoring CO2 levels. They told
one of the astronauts that the level was still in range, but had been
steadily creeping up and that it would do him some good to get some
exercise.
So, assuming I have that all correct, my question is, was this just an
indicator that his body wasn't processing oxygen as best it could? In
other words, when he is in better shape there will be less CO2 output
and thereby at a more ideal level. |

If it were a shuttle astronaut, this may have to do with trying to
extent the shuttle flight as much as possible. Exercise produces more
CO2 and thus requires more filters. I would assume that the crewmember
was basically told that there were enough spares to allow him to
continue to exercise.
If this were a station astronaut, it is normal to see the CO2 levels
rise during a Shuttle visit since you are adding so many more humans
buzzing around the station. And remember that the CO2 removal unit is in
the russian segment, so it takes a while for CO2 in Destiny (where there
is an exercise bike and lots of shuttle crew presence) to make its way
to Zvezda to get filtered out.
There is a CO2 removal unit in Destiny, but it is rarely activated. |
